At a high level, DevOps is simply the practice of treating your business operations like a software system. The various different proceedures you have to make sure your business is running the way it needs to are specified and laid out in terms of inputs, outputs, and process steps. With that done, much can be automated so that each and every time a process is performed, the same exact steps take place.
On the lower level, this automation can be done through the use of various tools that have been created for this purpose. This includes things like Puppet or Ansible, or even just bash or Python scripts. Interfaces to these processes can be created including job and status queues, etc… The whole system can be designed and specified using diagraming languages like SysML or business process mapping.
This whole idea plays very well for businesses trying to implement a quality management system. A QMS is a designed system that specifies how your business is going to achieve its quality goals. This can be for a particular area of the business, or better yet could be all encompassing and specify ALL processes within the business because you want quality in every aspect of your operations. This is an area our company is highly interested in research and development–we have many ideas that could help a business that needs to follow strict quality guidelines like ISO9001, 13485, or 62304.
